Love and Geography

There is always a beginning, there is always an end, and there is always a means to an end.  "It's funny how we spend time making money to spend time" -Unknown.  Most people would argue that money does not buy you happiness.  I would agree.  Can money buy you a plane ticket?  Sure it does.  But, does money buy you time and can you afford to take that time off from your daily responsibilities?  I can't.  In fact, it would set me back.  It would take me longer to make up the work, time, and money I spent to get to my destination.  What does a plane ticket have to do with anything?  You decide.  I've just never been the type of person who needed furniture.  I've always been curious about the inner workings of everything around me.  Everything has to mean something.  There is a purpose to our reality.

time(energy)/time(longitude,latitude) = money/time(passion)

I just made that up.  I'm not even really sure how that would equate.  Yet, I am compelled to use these variables.  Maybe the answer doesn't matter.  Maybe you wonder why I included "love"?  Love, time, money, and location.

Yes, And?

I'm the type of person that gets really excited when in an interesting conversation. I have to shut myself out and focus on the speaker if I am to get all the information. I do this by making eye contact with the speaker and giving them my attention.

Weather it's an engaging conversation, or just casual conversation I am engaged in, it is polite to show the speaker I am listening (and rude not to!). I also do this with verbal gestures. Often, someone has a great idea, and I say, "Yes, But.". When I say, "but", I am discounting what the person just said. I learned that from my friend Tony.

These days, when someones has a great idea, I immediately say, "Yes! And?" By being a "yes, and?" person, I can then make my point while not trampling on the other person's great point. That has helped me to become an active listener.

The Big Bang (Design and Lifestyle Theory)

Do you ever start a new project, look around at your materials, and ask yourself: "Where do I begin?"  Often, when I start a new Web Site, I cannot decide if I will begin in Photoshop, or if I will begin in Notepad.  In either case, when I start my design, I am looking at a blank canvas.  When coding Web language, the blank canvas is referred to as the DOM.  We have all experienced this moment.  Maybe you are preparing an outline for a class you are teaching, maybe you are writing a letter, and maybe you are writing a song. I was reading this post from Robert Hodgin on all manner of distractions.  I must say, this was truly an inspirational post.  It helped me simply the creative process.  Here's an excerpt:

"I have a hard time getting started. Much like I have a hard time committing to doing laundry. Or cooking dinner. I think about all the steps needed to successfully wash clothes or cook a 3-course meal and I get all flustered and the lazy gene kicks in. But if I stop thinking about all the necessary steps and just focus on the next logical step, the chore seems to finish itself."[1]

While I think preparation is great, sometimes the creative mind needs to stare at a blank canvas and then just go for it!
